If you were wondering what happened to the Snoopy and Dilbert cartoons that had been in the Juggling Cartoons section of the JIS Picture Gallery, the following correspondence between Grishma Mehta of United Media and the JIS should explain why these 4 images were removed:

Who or what is UFS, and how may they be contacted? How may I obtain the necessary consent? You state that the *names* of your intellectual property cannot be used. Did you in fact mean that the property itself cannot be used? Certainly one is free to use names as one wishes. > Therefore, I must > request that you remove any Dilbert and Peanuts images from your Web > site and confirm for me that you have done so. I have indeed removed these images. > I appreciate your cooperation. If you have any questions about > copyrights, please consult with your attorney. I respect the copyrights of others as I expect others to respect mine. I hope we can find a way to restore these images to the world of jugglers who would appreciate and enjoy them. I would certainly be happy to include whatever credits and copyright notices that you might require. > Sincerely, > > Grishma Mehta > United Media barry -- Barry Bakalor Juggling Information Service E-mail: jis@juggling.org http://www.juggling.org/ robot: info@juggling.org ftp.juggling.org:/juggling |

In fact, this is neither. It is a nonprofit organization providing a free information service on the subject of juggling. > The copyrights and trademarks for Dilbert and Peanuts > are owned by United Feature Syndicate, a division of United Media. I hope you understand our need to protect our existing clients. I hope you will find a way to protect your interests without restricting such uses as mine, which I believe would be in your own best interest. But that is your decision, and I respect it. > If you would like to link to our site, you can use one of the official > Dilbert or Peanuts link icons available through our web site: > http://www.unitedmedia.com/comics Had you permitted the use of the cartoons depicting juggling, I would have been pleased to add such links to your site and provide any credit you desired. But as your web site is unrelated to the subject of juggling, without such permission there is no point in my using these icons or creating this link. I would be happy to do so in the future if UFS changes this policy. > If you would like more information on our copyright, please go to > http://www.unitedmedia.com/copyright.html Thank you for providing this information.
