The 18th Annual Isla Vista Juggler's Festival

Friday-Sunday, April 1-3, 1994

This is the oldest continuously running juggling festival in the known universe. It's huge, it's wonderful, it's fun. If you've never been there before, don't miss this year's! Highlights will include a wonderful feature film, and a killer live juggling show, with many of the best professional juggling acts in the entire metropolitan Isla Vista area!

Sponsored by the Fabulous Strombolis

in memory of Patty Laney

General Information

For first-timers: Isla Vista is just west of U.S. 101, about 10 miles north of Santa Barbara, and is the home of the Univ. of Cal. at Santa Barbara. Anisq' Oyo park is near the center of town, surrounded by Embarcadero Del Mar and Embarcadero Del Norte. You can't miss it, trust me. The theater is adjacent to the park, as are many restaurants and groceries. A 5 or ten minute walk from the park will take you to the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

Those wishing to stay in hotels should look in Goleta, which is much closer than Santa Barbara - there are no motels in Isla Vista itself. If you have a car, Goleta is quite close. Check out the Goleta Valley Inn, Motel 6, Pilot House and others.

Those on a tighter budget need only bring a sleeping bag. Space is kindly provided by the United Methodist Church, 892 Camino Del Sur, at the corner of Sueno Road. Go to the wooden frame house behind the church for safe nights dreaming of juggling.

Schedule

Fri., April 1:

6pm-12: Welcome party, juggling. Gym at the Devereux Santa Barbara school.
It's at the west end of campus, down Slough Road, which comes off of the intersection of Storke and El Colegio roads (in the upper left corner of the Isla Vista town map). Follow Slough Road 0.7 miles, and turn left at Seaway Drive. Devereaux Hall will be straight ahead. The gym is behind it, on the right. Signs will be posted at the church and at the windmill in Anisq' Oyo Park if there are any changes in plans.

Sat., April 2:

dawn-dusk: Anisq' Oyo Park: Workshops, open juggling, props for sale.
Note: new this year, alcohol is prohibited in the park.

7:30-10:30: Isla Vista Theater I: Public Show, $6, students $5
in memory of Andrew Britten

7:30-8:50 Nick Furst, S.B.I.
Second World Premiere of this feature film by Isla Vista filmmaker and Stromboli Jon Zuber. Here's your chance to view this festive feature film, its first premiere having been sold out at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. A normal, everyday, spy satellite, secret agent love story - with clowns.

9:00-10:30 The Handy Dandy Juggling Extravaganza
This public show will include some great new performers, some great performers not seen locally in many years, and some great new performances by people brought back not only by popular demand, but by their own insistence. The show is a benefit for the Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center. Note: If you wish to perform or help with the show, please contact Barry Bakalor. A tentative alphabetical list of some of the expected performers:

  • Dan Bennett
  • Ben Decker - ben@pnet01.cts.com
  • John Gilkey
  • Dan Holzman
  • Ken Martin
  • Sean McKinney
  • Dan Menendez
  • Cliff Spenger

10:30-???: Party and juggling following the show, at the United Methodist Church.

Sun., April 3:

dawn-dusk: Anisq' Oyo Park: Workshops, open juggling, props for sale.
And tearful farewells.
